Description
The valve tower at the south-east corner of Widdop Reservoir was constructed between 1872 and 1878 by engineer John La Trobe Bateman. This unique structure is built from large ashlar blocks and features a bitumen roof. It has a square plan with tapering sides and is designed in an Egyptian style. The south-facing door has monolithic jambs with a batter, while the corners are accentuated by tapering pilasters that serve as buttresses to the frieze. A projecting double cornice adds to its architectural detail. The sides and rear of the tower include rectangular windows with large plain stone surrounds. The design was inspired by Bateman's visit to Egypt for the opening of the Suez Canal.
