Description

This is a row of shops, originally built as overlookers’ houses and shops in 1868. They were designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt as part of the Saltaire model village. The buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. The row comprises two and three-storey sections, each with two bays, with end and intermediate blocks projecting forward and featuring gabled fronts. The ground floor now mainly has modern shop fronts, although some retain original stone surrounds and cornices. First-floor windows are round-arched, with some featuring keystones and archivolts; the gabled blocks have paired windows. Nos. 61 and 63 have segment-headed windows on the second floor. Original upper-floor windows remain in some locations. Bracketed eaves are prominent, with larger brackets supporting the gables. Nos. 61 and 63 have hipped roofs, and the row features broad chimney stacks with cornices.
