Description
The premises occupied by Hire Power Limited, dated 1806, were formerly known as the Old Bell Chapel. This large, plain, two-storey rectangular building resembles a barn and is five bays long. It is constructed of sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings, featuring a plinth and a plat band. The stone slate roof has saddlestones, and there is a band across the gable ends with bracketed eaves cornice, leading to a simple pediment. A large Venetian window with radial glazing at the head of the center light is located in the south-east gable end, while widely spaced ashlar framed windows are found on the sides. The north-west gable end has three windows and a cornice hood on consoles above the former main entrance. A plaque indicates that the chapel was built by public subscription as a chapel of ease. In the gable, there is a very large circular ashlar panel inscribed with the names of the church wardens at the bottom, which appears to have been intended for a clock. This panel is dated 1808.
