Description

The Unitarian Chapel, built in 1796 and enlarged in 1901, is located on Dirty Lane in Great Hucklow. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone with gritstone dressings and quoins. The building features a continuous plain sill band and a plain eaves band, topped with a 20th-century concrete tile roof, while the southern addition has blue slate. The chapel has stone-coped gables with plain kneelers and consists of four bays, with three bays being single storey and the southern bay rising to two storeys.

Both the east and west elevations display three semi-circular headed glazing bar sash windows set in plain ashlar surrounds. To the west of the narrower southern bay, there is a semi-circular headed doorcase with a 20th-century door, above which is a 2-light square sectioned mullion window. The south gable wall features a similar window below a plaque inscribed 'Founded 1696. Rebuilt on present site 1796. Enlarged 1901', linking it to an upper semi-circular headed small pane window in a plain surround. Above this is a corbelled out bellcote topped by a stone cross. The north gable wall has a round plaque inscribed 'lL 1796'.

Inside, the chapel includes a western gallery supported by turned wooden columns, 1910 pews, pine panelling, and a cusped panelled pulpit. There is also a reset wall memorial to William Drabble from 1877.
