Description

The main block of the Southfield Junior Immigrant Education Centre, dated 1859, was originally associated with the adjacent former chapel. It features a Gothicized one-storey symmetrical design with a central section and flanking breaks, one of which incorporates the master's house. The building is constructed of sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings. It has weathered coping to the plinth and weathered moulded eaves with carved leaf stops. The steeply pitched roof is covered with Welsh shaped and graded slates and includes saddlestones. Gables rise above two-light mullioned windows with ogee tracery. The central break is buttressed and has a truncated coped gable, while the master's house features a canted mullioned bay window. This building is likely the first Gothic Revival school design in Bradford, contrasting with the then-dominant Italianate style.
