Description

This is a terrace of six improved workers' houses and a shop, completed in 1861 as part of the Saltaire model village by the architects Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. They are arranged as a terrace of two bays each, with the end houses slightly projecting and gabled. Number 23 features a shop front with a cornice supported by long brackets. The entrances have fanlights set within stepped reveals. Ground-floor windows are round-arched and archivolted, while first-floor windows are square-headed, except for the end houses, which have a triple-group design with round-arched upper lights. Original six-pane sashes are retained, and a three-panel door is at number 21. A first-floor sill band runs across the terrace, and shaped stone brackets support the gutter.
