Description
The turnpike gateway, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, is located approximately 3 metres southwest of Cliffe Castle in Keighley. It is made of cast and wrought iron and features a double gate with a pedestrian gate on the right. The gate-piers are designed as necked columns with roll mouldings and rounded finials. The gates are equipped with simple strap-hinges that wrap around the piers, and their iron frames are filled with latticed bars that radiate from the outer corners. Triangular gate-rests are fixed to the lower bars. This gateway originally stood in South Street, Keighley, near the junction with Goulbourne Street, on the Halifax Road, which was constructed in 1794.
