Description

Laurel Mount Rest Home is a house, now serving as an old people's home, that was built in 1885. It features coursed dressed stone with herring-bone tooling and a graduated grey slate roof. The building is designed in the Canlean style and has two storeys with an attic, comprising four bays. There is a plinth, and the entrance is located in the third bay, accessed by steps leading up to a doorway with a moulded surround and Tuscan colonnettes. The inner door is Venetian, and there is a dated cartouche above it.

The windows are sash style with glazing bars, featuring flat-faced mullions and architraves. The first and fourth bays have tripartite windows, with the first-floor windows adorned with swan-neck pediments. The second bay has three single-light windows with a tripartite window above, and there is a two-light window above the entrance door. The first and fourth bays also have attic gables with small, pedimented, two-light windows. A balustrade runs over the second and third bays, with coping and finials. The roof is hipped, with corniced stacks on the roof slope and lateral stacks on the right gable.

At the rear, there is a stair-window featuring two round-arched and round-based lights with margin lights. The left return continues in the same style as the front. On the right side, there is a two-storey semicircular bay with three curved windows on each floor, topped with a balustrade and finials. On the left side, a glazed door is flanked by windows.

Inside, the hallway is panelled with a marbled floor. The staircase has turned balusters and a moulded handrail, along with five Art Nouveau stained glass windows. The ground floor rooms retain original decorative panelling, fireplaces, and part-glazed doors. The first floor includes an early 20th-century bathroom suite, said to have been fitted for the visit of the Princess Royal, complete with original decor and fittings.
