Description

Nos. 1 to 23, Apsley Crescent, including Nos. 27 and 29 Marlborough Road, is a crescent of two-storey houses with basements, built in 1852. It is an early work by the architectural partnership of Andrews and Delaney and shares design features with Peel Square. The houses are constructed with ashlar facades, distinguished by a first-floor sill band and a bed mould to the frieze, supporting consoles that rise to a gutter cornice. They have slate roofs and corniced chimneys. Most of the houses have three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, featuring revealed sash windows. No. 1 has a sharply concave curved front, incorporating the doorway, which has original double panelled doors, a semi-circular fanlight, pilaster reveals, an archivolt keyed arch, all contained within pilaster strips with carved consoles supporting dosserets to a bracketed pediment. No. 27 Marlborough Road has a sharply curved corner inset between the crescent and the road, with a four-window arrangement, while No. 29 is also of four windows and shares similar detailing.
