Description

This is a late 17th century yeoman's house, situated on Westfield Lane in Idle. The building is rectangular in plan and constructed of rendered gritstone, with an irregular three-bay front. It has a stone slate roof featuring saddlestones and prominent kneelers. The front elevation displays a weathered string course above the ground floor. There are four-light chamfered mullion windows on the first floor, and similar five-light windows on the ground floor. A four-centred arch doorway has chamfered jambs, a large squared lintel, with the string course stepped over the doorway. A low, two-story rear wing is present, with a mullion and transom window and a round arched window on its west side. The interior has been modernised, but retains exposed chamfered main beams on the ground floor, including stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. Nos 32 and 40 terminate a group of small-scale buildings along the north side of Westfield Lane.
