Description

This is a lodge, built between 1868 and 1881 for John Foster and Son as the main gatehouse to a mill complex. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The building has a two-storey, L-shaped plan with a rounded section where the wings meet. Both wings feature gabled fronts. The left wing's gable front has a three-bay, round-arched open porch on square piers at ground floor level, providing an entrance to the mill. Elongated keystones support a deep, moulded eaves cornice and blocking course. The road-facing front has a three-light canted bay window on the ground floor right, with round-arched windows. A round-arched doorway is located between the wings, along with round-arched windows to the ground floor. The paired sash windows on the first floor of the wings have stilted, cambered heads with elongated keystones. The building features deep, bracketed eaves and moulded copings, as well as good ornamental, tall ashlar stacks.

A dwarf ashlar wall supports cast-iron railings with dog-bars. The railings have alternate spear-headed and clove finials, and return to the archway to the left. Similar iron gates are also present.
