Description
The 1st and 2nd World War Memorial, located at the junction with Granby Street in Queensbury, was unveiled on 2nd September 1922 for the First World War and includes two tablets for the Second World War, unveiled on 14th May 1950. Designed by Allan Hainsworth of Queensbury and built by W. Priestley and Sons, the memorial is made of sandstone ashlar and features a tall octagonal Gothic structure in the Early English style, standing on a wide three-step octagonal podium. It has a moulded base and arched traceried sides with foliated spandrels, framed by clustered colonnettes with foliated capitals. The slender spire is topped with a panelled cap and cross finial. Behind the memorial is a stepped hammer-dressed stone wall that displays six memorial tablets, four dedicated to those who fell in the First World War and two for the Second World War. The memorial area is enclosed by iron gates and railings set on an ashlar plinth.
