Description
Black Dyke Mills consists of mill buildings located on the south side of Queensbury High Street. The eastern part was built between 1842 and 1848, with an extension to the west constructed between 1848 and 1851. A slightly larger block at the far west was built between 1854 and 1868 for John Foster and Son. The buildings are made of hammer-dressed stone and feature stone slate roofs. The eastern block and its extension are five storeys tall, while the western block is four storeys, both with basements and attics.
On the south side, the eastern block has 15 bays with industrial 6-pane casements, and the centre five bays project slightly forward. The nine-bay extension to the left is similar and includes a rounded stair and hoist tower on the right that rises above the eaves and has a pyramidal roof. The later block to the left is slightly taller and wider, featuring 27 bays of similar casements and one bay of loading doors topped with a small triangular pediment. To the right, there is a round-arched carriageway with alternate rusticated quoins and voussoirs. Additionally, towards the right end, a square tower with a pyramidal roof has round-arched lights arranged in groups of three and two. Both blocks have a dentil eaves cornice and roof lights. The north side is similar but includes some later additions. The west gable end has four bays with a central square projecting tower that features small round-arched lights and a pyramidal roof. Single-storey sheds on the north side are not included in the listing.
