Description
The Moravian Chapel and Minister's House, completed in 1755, is a simple two-storey rectangular building with a rendered sandstone front. It features two tall round-headed windows at the centre and shorter similar windows on the first floor above flanking round-headed doorways. All windows and doorways have small impost blocks and keystones in their arches. The stone slate roof has corbel brackets at the eaves, saddlestones, and prominent shaped kneelers. A louvred stone bellcot with a pyramid roof and ball finial sits on the ridge. The minister's house was added around 1782 to 1800, partially under the same roof, with exposed sandstone "brickwork" and flush quoins. It includes three ashlar framed sash windows and a squared jamb doorway with a cornice, as well as a 19th-century extension to the west. The rear elevation of the chapel mirrors the front's fenestration, with the addition of a central two-storey sandstone "brick" projecting bay that houses the organ loft, featuring a round-headed window facing north. The minister's house side has two-light square mullion windows. Inside, the chapel retains panelled galleries on both sides supported by wooden Doric columns. The pews date from the late 19th century. The early to mid-19th century organ case, with iron finials, is set in a segmental niche adorned with Doric entablature impost mouldings and an anthemion patterned keystone. The late 18th-century pulpit is panelled and swept into the base. Notably, John Wesley preached here in 1759.
