Description

Ghyll House is a house dating from the mid 17th century, which was altered and extended in the mid 18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of rubble brought to course and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and a three-room front with quoins between each bay. The first cell is from the 17th century and was probably originally gabled as a cross-wing to an earlier timber-framed house, remnants of which can still be found inside.

On the left side of the front, there is a three-light double-chamfered mullion window with a four-light window above that was originally a two-light window. The doorway, which is covered by a glass porch, has monolithic jambs, and to its right is a three-light stepped flat-faced mullion window with a four-light chamfered-mullion window above. On the right side, there is a three-light stepped window on both floors. The left-hand return wall features a coped gable with kneelers at different angles to the tabling, suggesting it may have been moved and originally had a front-facing gable.

At the rear, there is a doorway with monolithic jambs to the left of a small chamfered light for the staircase, and to the right, there is a two-light window with a cavetto-moulded mullion. Inside, the central room contains an 18th-century fireplace with a segmental-arched lintel, and the roof features purlins with half-lap joints that have been reused from an earlier building.
