Description

Higher Scholes Farmhouse and attached barn dates to the late 17th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed stone with a rubblestone barn, both with stone slate roofs. The farmhouse has four first-floor windows and quoins. The windows have plain stone surrounds, and flat-faced mullions. The ground floor has a part-glazed door to the left and right of a two-light window, with a three-light window above them, and a three-light and three one-light windows above that. There is ashlar coping on the left side. A central stack has been rebuilt. At the rear of the farmhouse, double-chamfered mullion windows are visible, including one on the ground floor and four above; most of the mullions have been removed. The attached barn to the left has three bays, with a later outshut added to the front of the right bay. The barn also has quoins. A central cart entry features quoins and a massive stone lintel. There is a doorway to the left with a chamfered, quoined surround, and a similar doorway to the outshut, alongside a four-light flat-faced mullion window. Blocked vents are present. Ashlar coping is visible on the left. The rear of the barn has a threshing door with a chamfered, quoined surround.
