Description

This is a terrace of nine improved workers' houses located at 1-9 Shirley Street, Shipley, part of the Saltaire model village. Completed by 1861, the terrace was designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The houses are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof.

Each house is two storeys and two bays wide, with the end houses projecting slightly and featuring gabled ends. The entrances have fanlights set in stepped reveals, while the ground-floor windows have round-arched, archivolted openings. First-floor windows are square-headed, except for the end houses, which have a triple group with round-arched lights. Original six-pane sashes remain in houses 2, 7, and 8, and houses 7 and 8 retain their original three-panel doors. A first-floor sill band runs along the terrace, and shaped stone brackets support the gutter.
