Description
Heaton Mount is a substantial villa residence designed by local architect J T Fairbank for Robert Kell in 1864. It was purchased in 1889 by the Ambler family, owners of the Midland Mills. The building features lavish Italianate-Baroque detailing and is constructed of finely wrought ashlar masonry. It has a half H plan and is two stories high, with a narrow recessed entrance bay. The wings of the villa have full-height slightly canted bays with rounded corners.
The exterior includes a plinth, a full entablature across the ground floor that returns to the sides, and chamfered rusticated quoins on the wings. The frieze has a bed mould, and there is a modillion bracket cornice topped with a balustraded parapet, with particularly ornate carved irons over the corners of the wings. The windows are arcaded and framed by slender Corinthian pilasters. A prominent feature is the Corinthian columned and pilastered porch at the center, which is accessed by a broad flight of steps. The ground floor entablature returns over the porch and is adorned with an elaborately carved and crested parapet, flanked by carved irons. The return elevations also feature similar coupled windows with pierced balconies.
The south-east front of the villa commands a terrace that overlooks spacious hillside grounds. Although the interior has been considerably altered, it still retains a staircase with ornately turned banisters.
