Description

Nos. 18 to 51, Hanover Square form an unusual formal square for Bradford, characterized by a tapering plan with a closed west end and corner houses featuring concave elevations. The square was built and laid out circa 1840. The buildings are constructed of gritstone, with coursed blocks and an ashlar sill band to the first floor. A frieze, eaves cornice, and stone slate shallow mansard roof with attics complete the exterior. The central and end houses on the north and south sides project slightly, with pediments above the cornice containing attic windows. The central house on the west end is similarly designed. The north and south terraces have one-window fronts; the first floor features tripartite arched lights with thin mullions, while the ground floor has two lights. The west end houses, including the concave fronts, have a round-headed window above the doorway, and paired round-headed light windows to both the ground and first floors. Pilastered tripartite attic dormers are topped with a frieze and cornice. The properties have panelled doors with semi-circular, radially glazed fanlights, and shaped consoles to the cornice-hoods above.
