Description
Nos 48 to 56 on Chapel Street are three two-storey cottages built in the late 17th century and early to mid 18th century. They were altered in the early 19th century when they were subdivided into smaller tenements. The cottages are constructed from sandstone "bricks" with large, roughly dressed quoins. There is a weathered string course over the ground floor of Nos 50 to 54. The roof is made of common stone slate, featuring corniced chimneys and saddlestones on prominent shaped kneelers.
Originally, the cottages had chamfered mullion windows, but these were altered to square mullions in the early 19th century, with some windows modernized. No 50 retains an original cottage doorway with a roll-moulded edge and a lintel inscribed "TEA" above the date 1704. No 52 has a second original doorway with moulded jambs and a lintel, inscribed "E" over "TA" with the date 1684 below. No 56 features a large lintel to its doorway inscribed "MB" above the date 1753. The gable end of No 56 has a blind round-headed attic panel, and the windows on the rear elevations show traces of chamfered mullions.
