Description
The Gate Lodge and Gates to Whinburn Lodge, built in 1912, was designed by Simpson and Ayrton of London. It features coursed dressed stone with ashlar dressings and stone slate roofs, along with two rear wall stacks. The lodge is two storeys high and has an L-plan layout. The north-west gable includes a large bowed two-storey window with a curved parapet above it. On the ground floor, there is a six-light mullion window with a swagged frieze and a moulded band, and above it, a five-light mullion window with a similar moulded band. The left return of the lodge has a corner porch with round-headed arches supported by short Doric columns with high bases. The arches are rusticated and topped with a moulded band and a ramped parapet. The north-east gable features single ashlar cross casement windows with moulded pediments. The gates are flanked by curved low entrance walls and two tall square piers with moulded bases. Each pier has a narrow pilaster that rises through a pulvinated frieze and a moulded cap, topped with bell-canted caps and openwork ashlar finials with small balls.
