Description

The pair of chapels at Tinsley Park Cemetery, dated 1880, were designed by the architectural firm Holmes & Johnson. One of the chapels is currently used as a store. Constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings, the buildings feature steep pitched slate roofs and Gothic Revival styling. They have a symmetrical layout with a central entrance bay flanked by chapels that include side porches.

The exterior showcases a chamfered plinth and eaves, buttresses, coped parapets, and gables adorned with crosses. The western entrance features a moulded central arch along with smaller flanking arches supported by round piers and hoodmoulds. Above this entrance is a shouldered gable that includes a clock. Each side of the entrance has a slender buttressed bell tower topped with an octagonal spire. A foundation stone is located to the left of the entrance. The west ends of the chapels are reinforced with angle buttresses and have three-light pointed arched windows with Geometrical tracery and hoodmoulds. The east end mirrors this design but lacks the bell towers.

The outer sides of the chapels include four quatrefoil windows, and to the east, there are single gabled porches featuring single lancets in the gables, also with hoodmoulds. The east sides have a chamfered cusped flat-headed doorway. Inside the entrance bay, there is a three-bay wooden arcade supported by turned posts and roll moulded segmental pointed arches, along with a strutted common rafter roof. On either side of the arcade are two chamfered doorways with hoodmoulds and double doors.

The interior of the rendered chapel includes a string course and an arch braced principal rafter roof with traceried spandrels and corbels. There are two double doors with depressed segmental heads and moulded flat canopies supported by single shafts. Additionally, there is a doorway with a hoodmould leading into the porch. The partnership of Holmes & Johnson was active from 1869 to 1887, although S.F. Holmes passed away in 1882.
