Description
St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School and its adjoining boundary wall were built between 1879 and 1881 by ME Hadfield & Son for the 15th Duke of Norfolk. The school features coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof, which has a lozenge-shaped stone ridge stack. Architectural details include a string course, coped gables, and a gabled single bellcote with a cross on the right gable. The building is single storey and has an L-plan layout with three window ranges, consisting of three 4-light stone mullioned glazing bar windows. To the right, there is a single bay flat-roofed addition with a coped parapet and a large 4-light cross casement window with a label mould. Adjacent to this is the boundary wall, which features chamfered ashlar coping and a pair of square gate piers with similar caps. The left gable has a 2-light cross casement window with four upper lights. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value.
