Description
This is a Methodist church dated 1878. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof with coped gables and a single gable stack. The church is designed in a Romanesque style.
The exterior has two storeys and features a symmetrical facade with three bays and four windows. The facing gable has a projecting central section with clasping buttresses topped with pinnacles, and a moulded open pediment with a pedestal. A Venetian window is positioned above a round-arched double doorway with fielded four-panel double doors and a fanlight. Flanking the doorway are round-arched windows. Each return of the central projection contains a round-arched window with a hoodmould, and pierced parapets. Lower down, a round-cornered hipped projection with pierced balustrades incorporates three small round-arched windows. The side bays feature a single round-arched window topped with a hoodmould. The north and south sides are characterised by dentilled cornices and bays divided by pilaster buttresses. A clasping buttress topped with a pinnacle is located towards the front of the building. The south side has four double round-arched windows with margin glazing on each floor. The north side mirrors this fenestration, with the ground floor east window replaced by a round-arched door featuring four fielded panels and a fanlight. This door is flanked to the left by a sash window with a flat head and overlight, and to the right by a round-headed sash window, both with margin glazing.
The interior has been largely unaltered. It includes matchboard panelling on both floors and a coved cross beam plaster ceiling adorned with foliage corbels and bosses. At the front are two four-panel doors, and at the rear, two half-glazed double doors. A round-cornered panelled wooden gallery, supported by round cast-iron columns with Ionic capitals, features music stands at the east end and a two-tower organ case. Panelled glazed screens and doors are also present. The entrance hall exhibits cross beams with foliage corbels and two glazed screens with sidelights and round-arched overlights. Wooden winder staircases with turned balusters and ramped handrails are located at each end.
The church contains a bow-fronted, pine pulpit with curved pierced balustrades supported by three wooden twist columns, and incorporating stairs with turned balusters. A twentieth-century communion table and lectern are also present, along with a bow-fronted rail to the platform. Box pews with doors are found on the ground floor, while benches with shaped ends are located on the gallery. Memorials include a wall-mounted marble headstone, dating from around 1916, and a similar tablet commemorating the Hardcastle family.
