Description
The railway viaduct, built in 1845, was designed by Joseph Locke for the Sheffield, Ashton under Lyne and Manchester Railway Company. It features rock-faced stone with brick arches and ashlar dressings. The structure includes three main round arches with voussoirs, supported by piers and buttresses. On either side of the main arches, there is a smaller arch that is similar in design. The viaduct also has oval plates for wall ties, a string course, and a coped parapet wall that is topped with a wrought-iron railing. This viaduct is an important example of early monumental railway architecture.
