Description

Hillsborough House, originally built as a headteacher's house and now used as offices, dates from around 1884 and is likely designed by the architects Wilson & Masters for the Ecclesfield School Board. The building features coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof, complemented by a coped brick side wall and gable stacks.

The exterior is two storeys high with a three-window range. On the left, there is a slightly projecting gable with a plain sash window, and below it, a canted stone bay window that has three plain sashes and a blocking course. The right side includes a small plain sash and a gabled through-eaves dormer with a larger plain sash. Below, there is a 20th-century half-glazed door with sidelights, sheltered by a sloping hood supported by wooden brackets. To the right of the door, a double plain sash window is set within a stone mullion. The left return features a single-storey outshut.

The site is enclosed by an adjoining stone boundary wall with rounded corners. Along Parkside Road, there are spiked wrought-iron railings with a chamfered plinth and square stone piers topped with cross-gabled ashlar caps. The boundary includes four pairs of gate piers with wrought-iron gates. The higher boundary along Middlewood Road has gabled stone coping and a stepped flat-topped gable next to Hillsborough House. The range along Catch Bar Lane features gabled coping on the right, a small gateway, and a central double gateway. To the left, there is a higher wall with stepped slab coping, along with adjoining outbuildings that have hipped and lean-to roofs. These ancillary buildings serve Hillsborough Nursery, First and Middle Schools.
