Description

The Church of St John the Baptist, along with its attached boundary wall and gates, was built in 1874. It was designed by J.B. Mitchell-Withers, with a north-east vestry added in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone, with a brick interior, ashlar dressings, and slate roofs. Single gable and side wall stone stacks are present. A north-east vestry with a flat roof was added in the early 20th century.

The church is of Gothic Revival style and features a chamfered plinth and coped gables. The plan includes a chancel, vestries, a south transept, a nave with clerestory and aisles, a south porch, and a south-west tower.

The east side of the chancel is plain with a triple lancet window. The north-east vestry has a Tudor arched door and three lancets, while the south-east vestry has two lancets and a door. The south transept features a wheel window above two single lancets. The clerestory has four double lancets on each side. The west end has flanking buttresses and a wheel window with two single lancets below. The aisles each have three double lancets to the east and a single one to the west. A gabled south porch has a plain, chamfered doorway. The north aisle has a similar doorway. Each west end has two single lancets.

The tower is a thin square shape with three stages, string courses, and a single buttress. It has a single window on the lower stage and two-light windows at different levels on the upper stage. The traceried wooden belfry has a flared pyramidal slate roof with a finial.

Inside, the chancel is rendered and has a wagon roof with a double chamfered arch and shaft imposts, with doorways on each side. Aumbry and sedilia are present on the north and south sides, respectively. The east end has a Decorated style wooden reredos. The nave has four bay arcades with alternating round and octagonal piers, stiff-leaf capitals, and chamfered arches, supporting a scissor-braced roof. A single door leads to the tower. The aisles have lean-to roofs and pedimented draught screens. Fittings include 20th-century stalls and benches, a 19th-century traceried ashlar pulpit, and a square font with a 20th-century spire cover. A stained glass window from 1898 is by Kayll & Co., alongside five early 20th-century windows. A Decorated style wooden triptych war memorial dates to approximately 1920.

Attached to the church is a stone boundary wall approximately 80 metres long, with chamfered coping topped with a railing. To the right are a pair of gabled square piers and gates. To the left is a plainer pair of gate piers with a pedestrian gate.
