Description
The Mobilization Store and Squash Court, originally part of the former Hillsborough Barracks, was built between 1848 and 1854. It has since been converted into offices. The structure is made of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features a hipped slate roof with two coped ridge stacks.
The exterior includes a plinth, a first-floor sill band, half-round eaves, and coped parapets. The building is two storeys high with a nine-window range. At the time of the survey, the windows were mainly unglazed and boarded. The recessed center has five windows, with a central segmental pointed doorway featuring voussoirs, flanked by two windows. The slightly projecting end bays each have two windows on both floors.
The adjoining squash court is roofless and has blank enclosing walls with half-round coping. In front of the squash court is a section of curved retaining wall, approximately 25 meters long, also with half-round coping. Historically, ball courts were a common recreational feature in 19th-century barracks, and this building is part of a complete mid-19th-century barracks complex.
