Description
The Magazine at the former Hillsborough Barracks is a building constructed between 1848 and 1854, designed for infantry use. It is made of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, and while the roof is not visible, it features moulded eaves. The structure is single-storey with a rectangular plan, and it has a lower storey projecting porch at each end, each containing a single end window and a single side door. The main block has two rows of small vertically set rectangular openings. Inside, there are two brick vaulted chambers and a curved cantilevered staircase. Historically, magazines were typically found in artillery barracks, and very few examples have survived, making this building notable. It forms part of a complete mid-19th century barracks complex.
