Description

The north-west barrack block of the former Hillsborough Barracks is a building that has been converted into flats. It was constructed between 1848 and 1854 and was used as industrial workshops in the mid-20th century before its conversion in 1990. The building features coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and hipped slate roofs, which include seven ridge stacks.

The layout consists of four barrack rooms with five windows each on every floor. The exterior includes a plinth, a first-floor band, and coped parapets. The building is two storeys high with a total of 20 windows. The windows are glazing bar sashes. The slightly projecting central block has ten windows, flanked by two sections with five windows each. Below this, there are four sashes next to doors, followed by another four windows, then single doors, and finally two more windows. The doors are panelled and double-leaved, featuring blank fanlights. The rear of the building has similar window arrangements, with loft doors above the ground floor doors, some of which are blocked, and an off-centre mid-20th century addition.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Hillsborough Barracks was built in response to concerns about civil unrest and was one of the first barracks designed with reformed ideas before the Crimean War. It is an early example of historicist architecture applied to this type of building. Despite the conversion, much of the original site remains, including the officers' quarters, institute, hospital, magazine, stables, riding school, and guard house.
