Description

The Riding School to the former Hillsborough Barracks, built between 1848 and 1854, is now used as offices. Originally serving as a riding school, it was later utilized as industrial workshops in the mid-20th century and converted for office use in 1990. The building is constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof.

The exterior includes a plinth, half-round eaves, and coped parapets and gables. It is a two-storey structure with a six-window range. The first-floor windows are semicircular glazing bar casements with voussoirs. The entrance gable, located on the northeast side, features a projecting central flat-roofed staircase tower with a central window, flanked by single windows in the gable. Below the central window is a round-arched doorway with voussoirs, which has an inserted mid-20th-century door. On either side of the entrance, there are single flat-roofed porches with parapets and single flat-headed blocked windows.

The right return has six windows, three of which are unglazed, and below it is an off-centre round-arched double door. The left return has similar window arrangements, with the central window altered to serve as a loft door. The interior has not been inspected.

Historically, riding schools were a crucial component of cavalry barracks, and this building is a contemporary example of such facilities, similar to the Beaumont Riding School at Aldershot. Despite its conversion, much of the original site remains, including officers' quarters, barracks, a hospital, stables, a magazine, and a guard house.
