Description
This pair of lodges and gateways, located at the rear of the Shrewsbury Hospital Almshouses, dates from around 1825 and is likely designed by Woodhead & Hurst. Built in the Tudor Revival style, the lodges are constructed of ashlar stone with stone slate roofs.
The south lodge is two storeys high and features a four-window range. It has a chamfered plinth, moulded wooden eaves, and coped gables with kneelers and finials. There are two external gable stacks and three ridge stacks, all with grouped octagonal shafts. The lodge includes two two-storey gabled porches, each displaying a coat of arms, and beneath them are moulded Tudor arched doorways with label moulds. Between the porches are two two-light mullioned casements, with single casements on either side.
The north lodge is also two storeys and has a three-window range, featuring a chamfered plinth and eaves, as well as coped gables. It has a central ridge stack with four lozenge-shaped shafts and a smaller ridge stack with two similar shafts. The central two-storey gabled porch has a single lancet and a crosslet above it. Below the porch is a chamfered four-centred arched doorway with a label mould. Flanking the porch are single two-light mullioned casements, with single two-light pointed arch windows with label moulds below.
The linking gateway consists of four chamfered square piers topped with cross-gabled roofs and crocketed finials. It features a central pair of spearheaded iron gates with coats of arms, along with matching single pedestrian gates on each side. The interior has not been inspected.
