Description
Columbia Place is a warehouse, now used as a garage, built around 1849 with mid-19th century and late 20th century alterations. It was constructed for Thomas Tillotson & Co. The building features colourwashed stucco and a hipped slate roof, designed in the Classical Revival style. It has a plinth and a first-floor band, standing two storeys plus attics with three sets of 19 windows.
The east front includes a first-floor band, angle pilasters on the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course. The centre projects with a pediment and features a single 12-pane sash window, above which is a blank panel. On either side of the central window are similar 12-pane sashes with panels above them. The central doorway, which is now blocked, is round-arched and moulded, topped with a flat hood supported by scroll brackets, and carries sculpted and painted Royal arms. Flanking the doorway are round-headed glazing bar windows with moulded heads and imposts.
The left return has 19 plain sashes on the first floor, with 19 smaller plain sashes above. The ground floor features three large garage doors on the left and four plain sashes on the right. The interior has not been inspected. From around 1876 to 1937, the building was occupied by Brindley & Foster, organ builders, and the Royal arms likely relate to a royal appointment held by them.
