Description
Chapeltown War Memorial is located in the south-western part of Chapeltown Park, on elevated ground accessible by a footpath from Cowley Lane. Constructed from granite, it features a tall, rectangular classical pillar that rises from a three-stepped rectangular base. This base is set on a low step made from a different material. The front face of the pillar is adorned with a string of carved laurel leaves encircling a panel that lists the 118 names of those commemorated. Above this panel, the years 1914 – 1918 are carved. On the left side of the pillar, the years 1939 – 1945 are carved above the 48 names commemorated for the Second World War.
The pillar is topped with an out-sailing cornice, which is surmounted by a block that also features a cornice and pediment. The front face of this block is decorated with a laurel wreath and swags carved in relief, with the inscription LEST WE FORGET below these decorations.
On the front face of the bottom step, the inscription reads ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF CHAPELTOWN AND DISTRICT/ TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WARS. The memorial is surrounded by a rectangular paved area, enclosed by ten low stone square posts linked by iron rails.
