Description

The War Memorial is a large pillar made of polished grey granite, featuring a square section. The upper part of the pillar is slightly recessed and topped with a shallow capping stone that has roll mouldings. The corners of the pillar are cut away with fillets, which accentuates its height. It stands on a short base of unpolished granite, resting on a three-tier stone platform that is enclosed by low hollow-section steel railings.

On the south face of the pillar, beneath the dates 1914 - 1919 inscribed in gold letters, are memorials. A rectangular bronze plaque states, "To the glory of God in memory of the men of Caerphilly who laid down their lives in the Great War," with the names of the fallen listed below in three columns. A smaller bronze plaque underneath commemorates the townspeople who lost their lives in World War II from 1939 to 1945, stating, "We will remember them," with names, including civilians, recorded. A third plaque at the bottom honors two men who died in Northern Ireland in 1971 and 1972. All three plaques are framed.

Near the top of the north and south faces, there is a circular bronze plaque depicting the leaning southeast tower of the castle, encircled by a wreath and framed. Additionally, a pair of bronze spears are mounted on the east and west faces, between which is the motto "better death than dishonour."
