Description
The service wing and cottage at Queen's Tower were built in 1839 and 1855 for Samuel Roberts and later enlarged for the Duke of Norfolk. Constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings, the roof is not visible. The building features two brick side wall stacks and is designed in a crenellated Gothic style. It has a plinth, crenellated parapets, and round corner towers.
The courtyard includes a Tudor arched gateway to the east, which is adorned with traceried wooden gates and a false portcullis, flanked by buttresses that support round turrets with crosslets. Above the gate, there is a crenellated parapet. At the north-west corner, there is a machicolated octagonal tower with two stages, featuring two-light mullioned windows with label moulds.
On the north side, a square lodge rises two storeys. The north-west side has a 20th-century casement window to the left and a central chamfered doorway, flanked by single two-light mullioned windows under a common label mould. There is also a smaller single window between the door and the left window. The rear of the building has similar but simpler window designs. The interior has not been inspected. This structure serves as an ancillary building to Queen's Tower.
