Description
The gravestone to the Hill family, dating from around 1729, is located approximately 5 metres east of the south porch of the Church of All Saints in Aston-cum-Aughton. Made of ashlar sandstone, it is designed in the shape of a full-size coffin with a coped lid. The gravestone features dropped handles carved in relief at each end. It bears inscriptions for John Hill of Aston, who died in 1729, along with a motto that reads: "My Glass is Run My time / is spent no earthly care / can Death prevent." The gravestone also commemorates his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1709 at the age of 29, and their son Robert, who died in 1708 at the age of 2. This gravestone is noted for being particularly unusual for its period.
