Description
The Grange is a house dating from the early 18th century, with an addition from the 19th century. The main part of the house is constructed of dressed sandstone, with a graduated Westmorland slate roof. A two-storey-with-attic, three-bay main range is accompanied by lower additions to the rear and a 19th-century, four-bay wing projecting from the right return. Large, raised quoins are prominent on the main range. The central doorway has been replaced with a window set within an architrave, featuring a pulvinated frieze and cornice. Transomed casements with glazing bars are contained within raised ashlar surrounds and raised keystones; similar first-floor windows are also present. The roof is hipped at the front, with two gabled dormers and stacks along the ridge. A lower wing projecting to the right features a margin-light-glazed sash window adjacent to the main range, and four-pane sashes connected by a sill band, with a brick ridge stack and end stack. The right return of the main range has a two-storey wooden bay window with a French window; a dormer is also present. The left return features a glazed, single-storey porch and four-pane sashes in flush surrounds. A coped rear gable with a stack is found on the left return. A lower wing on the left contains a former three-light, square-faced mullioned window on the ground floor, now without its mullions. Above this, an intact three-light, mullioned window remains.
