Description
This headstone, dating from around 1736, is located approximately 11 metres west of the tower of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. It is made of red sandstone and features a thick slab with a shaped head. The headstone is adorned with relief carvings of knotted swags and a skull and crossbones, flanked by Doric pilasters topped with vases. The incised inscription reads: "Here Lyeth ye Body / of Rebekah the Wife of / Ionan Cutt of Sheffield / who died July 10th : 1736 / in ye 27 Year of her age. All you that come my Grave to see / As I am now, so must you be. Repent in time, make no delay / I, in my prime was Snatch'd away. In Love I Liv'd, in Peace I dy'd / My life was ask'd by God deny'd." This headstone is one of the earliest monuments in the churchyard and showcases fine artisan craftsmanship.
