SK49SE WHISTON SCHOOL HILL (off north-east side) 6/95 Headstone to Rebekah Cutt approximately 11 metres to west of tower of Church of St. Mary Magdalene GV II

Headstone. c1736. Red sandstone. Thick slab with shaped head and inscription beneath relief carvings of knotted swags and skull and cross bones and flanked by Doric pilasters surmounted by vases. Incised lettering reads: Here Lyeth ye Body / of Rebekah the Wife of / Ionan Cutt of Sheffield / who died july 10th : 1736 / in ye 27 Year of her age All you that come my Grave to see / As I am now, so must you be Repent in time, make no delay / I, in my prime was Snatch'd away In Love I Liv'd, in Peace I dy'd / My life was ask'd by God deny'd One of the earliest monuments of the churchyard and fine example of artisan craftsmanship.
