Description

Whiston Hall Barn is a derelict barn that likely dates from the 13th or 14th century, with alterations and enlargement occurring in the 16th century. The walling is probably from the 17th century, with later modifications. It features post and truss timber framing, coursed rubble, and dressed sandstone, but it had no roof covering at the time of the last survey. The barn is single storey with eight bays and aisles. The exterior walling has been significantly altered and partly rebuilt around 1980, yet it retains impressive gable walls with numerous slit vents at the south end.

Inside, five bays at the south end belong to the earlier construction and show several important features: wall posts are in their original positions, there are transverse lever holes and halvings for passing braces, evidence of reverse assembly in the aisle construction, and early joint forms such as trait-de-jupiter arcade plate scarfs and notched lap joints for the arcade braces. The roof structure was rebuilt in a principal-rafter form in the 16th century, but evidence of the original collar-rafter roof is indicated by reused rafters. The three bays at the north end display typical post and truss construction details from the 16th century, although various added posts and tie beams complicate the bay divisions.

This barn is recognized as the oldest example of an agricultural building in the county and the earliest timber-framed structure without regional parallels to date. It can be compared to the Barley Barn at Cressing Temple in Essex, which has been claimed to date as early as around 1200.
