Description

The powerhouse, built around 1910 for the Wentworth estate, is now used as a tractor shed and small factory. It features dressed sandstone and graduated slate roofs. The building has a tall, rectangular main block with a corner chimney and a double wing on the uphill side, along with a lower lean-to on the downhill side. It is primarily a single-storey structure, except for a two-storey lean-to.

The main block has a large gable entry supported by a timber lintel, with a circular window above. It includes shaped kneelers, gable copings, and a ridge lantern. On the left side, there are four-pane sash windows in the lean-to, while the right wing has a 20th-century door and a louvre. At the rear, there is a square, tapered chimney stack to the left of the gable with an iron-banded and tabled cap. Iron-balustraded steps lead to a door on the right, and there is a tripartite gable window with a taller central light and casements. To the left of the stack is a flat-roofed addition that has been refenestrated. The right lean-to projects forward and features an iron-barred window beneath a four-pane sash, with a hipped roof and a stack at the eaves.

Inside, the building is brick-lined, although the original machinery has been removed. The main block has a tiled dado and a travelling hoist, supported by fabricated iron roof trusses. This powerhouse provided the electricity supply for Wentworth Woodhouse and was also connected to the Fitzwilliam colliery at Elsecar. Coal-fired boilers located in the wings powered generators within the main block, with direct current stored in batteries on stone benches in the lean-to. The building is included for its group value.
