Description
The Round House is a tower mill that was built in 1793 and converted into two dwellings in 1835 for the Wentworth Estate. The structure is made of thinly-coursed sandstone, and the roof is not visible. It features a truncated four-storey cone shape with a small concentric lean-to on the south-west side. The building has a plinth and ashlar surrounds that are dressed to match the angle and curvature of the cone.
On the Mill Lane side, there is a door set in a glazed porch. To the left of the door, there is an inserted ground-floor window that has a horizontal-sliding sash with glazing bars. Above this, there are three windows; the lower two are casements with glazing bars, while the upper window is a horizontal-sliding sash. To the right of the porch, there is a blocked quoined doorway that now has a small window above it, and there is also a blocked square opening above. Similar sets of openings are placed directly opposite those described. At the rear, the glazed porch encloses a doorway topped with a consoled pediment. A continuous band and cogged course run beneath the coped parapet.
