Description
Wentworth School is a building constructed in 1837, with later additions, for Charles William, the 5th Earl Fitzwilliam. It is made of deeply-coursed, horizontally-tooled sandstone and features a graduated Welsh slate roof. The school has an H-plan layout, with an addition set back to the left that is in keeping with the main range. The main range presents a symmetrical facade and is a single storey with a 5-bay central block and taller single-bay crosswings. The building has a roughly-tooled plinth and quoined, double-chamfered door and window surrounds. The central entrance features a part-glazed door beneath a gablet with a finial, while the flanking windows have renewed casements, and the stone mullions have been removed. Stone gutter brackets are also present. Each gabled crosswing has a Tudor-arched, 3-light window with mullions and transoms, intersecting tracery, and a hoodmould, along with a quatrefoiled light set beneath an elaborate bargeboard. There are ridge stacks at each end of the main range, with transverse plinths each containing 5 flues in line, and ridge ventilator bases. On the right return, there is a 3-light window flanked by 2-light windows, with the mullions remaining. Inside, the school features a framed roof with arched trusses and was originally used as the Girls and Infants School.
