Description

Sunderland House and Sunderland Cottage, located on Sunderland Street, date from the late 18th century. The eastern elevation is faced with ashlar Magnesian limestone, while the south and west fronts are stuccoed. The roof is slate. The main facade has five bays and a moulded eaves cornice with a blocking course. It features sash windows with glazing bars. A pediment, supported by shallow scrolled consoles, sits above the central three bays. A two-storey arched recess is centrally positioned. The main entrance has an oblong fanlight with glazing bars (with a semi-circular design within the oblong) and is set within a moulded ashlar surround and cornice supported on elongated tetraglyphs with guttae. The south front has five bays with sash windows in moulded frames, and rusticated quoins. The west front incorporates a mid-19th century porch with Ionic columns and a very deep entablature; the door itself has two semi-circular headed panels and an oblong fanlight. Rusticated quoins and a plinth are also visible on the west front.
