Description

Wyndthorpe Hall is a country house from the early 19th century, now functioning as a private nursing home. It features ruled stucco and a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys high with a three-bay entrance front and a one-bay garden front on the right side.

The entrance front has a plinth and a central recess with glazed double doors framed by tall Ionic columns that extend to the first-floor sill band. The outer bays have projecting sills for the sash windows, which include glazing bars. On the first floor, a band connects the projecting sills to the sashes, continuing over the entrance columns as a corniced architrave. There is a string course beneath the eaves cornice, topped with a blocking course, and the taller central bay features a pediment. The hipped roof has three corniced ridge stacks, with similar stacks on the taller transverse ridge at the centre.

On the right return, the central bays project forward. Each bay has French windows, with those in the outer bays set in round-arched recesses. The first floor mirrors the front, with a pedimented centre that includes an architraved triangular panel in the tympanum. The central ridge and separate hipped roofs over the side bays are visible from the front.

Inside, there is a galleried central stair-hall with Ionic columns and pilasters on the ground floor, topped with a superimposed Ionic order. A contemporary fireplace is located on the right, featuring recessed panels on the jambs and frieze. A wooden staircase with a wrought-iron balustrade leads from the left to a wreathed wooden handrail, although the matching balcony balustrade has been removed and is said to be in storage. The interior also includes architraved wall panels, cornices, and a domed roof light with radial glazing bars.

In the front-right room, there is an earlier marble fireplace with coloured inlay, though the panel on the frieze depicting a shepherd and dog is damaged. The room behind it features a fine wooden fireplace in the Adam style, adorned with trophies on each jamb, although its garlanded frieze decoration is missing. Wyndthorpe Hall was formerly the home of Lord Chetwyn. Additional ranges on the left return are not of special interest.
