Description
Broom Lodge is a house built in the mid to late 18th century, with an early 19th-century wing that has been altered. It features painted brick and a Welsh slate roof, with an L-shaped plan that includes a lower wing at the rear right. The front has two storeys and an attic, with five bays. There is a chamfered brick plinth, and the central entrance has a 19th-century part-glazed door with a plain fanlight, flanked by tall sash windows with projecting sills and flat arches. The first floor has a band beneath similar sash windows with moulded sills and flat arches. The eaves cornice and baited gutter are also notable, along with later brick stacks at the ends. The rear wing has a 20th-century addition that is not of special interest.
Inside, there are six-panel doors off the hall with 18th-century architraves that have cornices, and a 19th-century staircase. In the 19th century, the house served as a private boarding school for girls.
