WESTGATE 1. (north side) 5096 ------------ Milestone at corner of Westgate and Castlegate, between the Police House and the Carpenters' Arms SK 5992 6/120

After 1778 (when the Bawtry and Tinsley Turnpike Trust was founded), perhaps as late as early C19. Millstone grit, with cast iron front. Top inscribed:- BAWTRY AND TINSLEY ROAD TICKHILL West side inscribed:- BAWTRY 4 MILES East side inscribeb:- SHEFFIELD 17 MILES TINSLEY 13 MILES ROTHERHAM 10½ MILES.
