Description

The milestone located at the corner of Westgate and Castlegate, between the Police House and the Carpenters' Arms, dates from after 1778, likely into the early 19th century. It is made of millstone grit with a cast iron front. The top of the milestone is inscribed with "BAWTRY AND TINSLEY ROAD TICKHILL." The west side reads "BAWTRY 4 MILES," while the east side lists distances to Sheffield (17 miles), Tinsley (13 miles), and Rotherham (10½ miles).
