Description

The cart shed at Home Farm is a late 18th-century structure, which was enlarged in the late 19th century, originally built for the Wentworth Castle estate. It is constructed from coursed, squared sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys and consists of six bays, with large quoins at the corners.

The central four-bay arcade has segmental arches supported by ashlar piers and voussoirs. There is a later casement window in the first bay and a double-chamfered surround to the casement in the sixth bay. On the first floor, there are casement windows set in ashlar surrounds, complete with projecting sills and deep lintels. The gable copings are cavetto-moulded.

On the right side of the building, there is an ashlar surround to a doorway located to the left of a window. A square window on the first floor features an eared and shouldered architrave, while a doorway above it on the left is connected by a walkway to an adjacent barn. The eaves band is also cavetto-moulded, and there is an ashlar-dressed gable slit vent. The eared and shouldered architrave on the right return resembles the second-floor windows of Wentworth Castle's east front and may have been reused after the remodelling of the southern return bay between 1759 and 1764. Originally, before its heightening and extension, this building formed a pair with the adjacent cottage.
