Description

The Church of St. James, built in 1841 and patroned by F. W. T. Vernon-Wentworth, is a Grade II listed building located in Wentworth Castle. It is constructed from deeply-coursed, dressed sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof. The church is designed in the Gothic Revival style and includes an embattled west tower with a south porch, a 4-bay nave, and a chancel that are combined into one structure, along with an added north vestry.

The tower has a lean-to porch with a pointed south door that features shafts in a chamfered surround and a hoodmould. There is a string course beneath the parapet. The tower itself is flanked by clasping buttresses and has a pointed window with a hoodmould. Above this, there are diagonally-set clock panels with stringcourses above and below, louvred belfry lancets, and crocketed corner pinnacles.

The nave and chancel are set on an ashlar plinth with a moulded band. They feature four double-chamfered lancets with leaded lights and hoodmoulds. The east window is a stained-glass design with two lights, although the walling has been rendered. The north vestry door is Tudor-arched and includes head-stops on its hoodmoulds.
