Description

The cottage located to the east of the cart shed at Home Farm is a farm cottage built in the late 18th century, with some alterations. It was constructed for the Wentworth Castle estate and features coursed, squared sandstone that is now rendered, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays across the front and one bay deep.

The central entrance has a six-panel door with a four-pane overlight, all framed in a square-faced surround. The other bays contain 16-pane sash windows with projecting sills. The gable copings are cavetto-moulded. On the left side, there is a blocked doorway framed in ashlar with a pulvinated frieze and cornice. The central first-floor window is a six-pane sash set within an eared and shouldered architrave, with a later casement window to its left. The gable has a pediment and a blocked, chamfered slit in the tympanum. There are two brick chimney stacks at the eaves on the left side.

Inside, the cottage retains some 18th-century doors as well as a re-used 17th-century door. The eared and shouldered architrave on the left return is similar to the second-floor windows of Wentworth Castle's east front and may have been repurposed following the remodelling of the southern return bay between 1759 and 1764. The cottage originally formed a pair with the adjacent cart shed, which has since been altered. An attached wall at the rear-left corner is listed along with the barn at Home Farm.
